I thought I was going to get to talk.

Not this time. I need to explain why you took up residence.

It's not...

Don't even finish that.

Ahem. Sorry. Sarah Williams, 15 year old with a step-mom, step-brother, and distracted father plus a mother who ran away to the theater was NOT a character I liked on first few watches of Labyrinth. She's bratty and self-centric in a way I never was allowed to be growing up.

Then I acquired the novelization. And paid MUCH sharper attention to certain items in Sarah's room. I began to see Sarah as being caught in a self-fulfilling magic geas. Jareth is the dancer who lured her mother away. Jareth set his eyes on her, and used the brother as a lure. Jareth sensed magic in her from a very young age. Perhaps her mother was actually fae too, but for whatever reason, Jareth was aware of her, and perceived of her a worthy opponent to test himself against...and trapped himself into granting her far more power than she might otherwise have ever known. There are many who despise the Jareth/Sarah arc (probably rightfully so) for the stalkerish side of it. Yet, when I watched the movie after the novel reading, I saw that Jareth never expected to fall. He never thought to guard against her ensnaring him. And the scene in the fancy ball is the point I saw it happen. He's smug, cocky, watching her fumble around...and then his expression changes so much. He's caught by her, and he realizes it, yet he's powerless to change to rules by that point because she's affecting the demesnes they play out the game in.

All of these things suddenly caused there to be a more mature, searching, needful woman who answered to Sarah to appear and demand time. I needed to show, or at least try to show, that Sarah/Jareth could be done from a position of equal power, or perhaps even weighted toward her having the upper hand. [personal profile] goblin_king played right along, and we fed each other's spark of inspiration. Sarah has evolved from being immersed in searching, to growing into the fact she is now the Goblin Queen at Jareth's side. There is RP history I am hesitant to allow, and may fork the muse here, to explore other avenues.

You are not forking me.

Please try to act your age.

When you do...

And this is why I call them PITAs.

5. Mun Prompt: "With the possible exception of the equator, everything begins somewhere." - C. S. Lewis

Tell us how it all began. Where did that first spark of inspiration come from? Were you captivated by your character's performance on screen? Were you unable to put down your character's book? When did that muse's voice first speak up? Has your character's attitude and goals changed since you first started writing for them? What about their beliefs?
